ASPAC Evening organized at UNESCO headquarters

The Embassy of Nepal participated in the annual ASPAC Evening organized by the Group at the UNESCO headquarters yesterday. Asia and the Pacific Countries (Known as ASPAC/ Regional Electoral Group IV at the UNESCO) organizes its annual ASPAC Event every year. On behalf of the ASPAC Group, H.E. Mrs. Ambika Devi Luintel, Ambassador /Permanent Delegate of Nepal to UNESCO delivered the welcome address. She highlighted on the mutual cooperation and understanding of ASPAC in advancing the noble goals of UNESCO and expressed that the celebration of the ASPAC annual Event demonstrates "Unity in Diversity" amongst the Asia and the Pacific Countries. Mr. Eric Falt, ADG/ERI, representing the Director-General of UNESCO said that the ASPAC Group occupies an important place in the organization. He appreciated the Group for organizing the grand Evening, which promotes cultures of Asia to the rest of the world.  He also mentioned about the highest levels’ visits from the member states to the UNESCO in the 2015. He also specifically mentioned about the devastating earthquake in Nepal in last April, which has damaged many cultural heritage sites in the country. He expressed solidarity of UNESCO with the Government and the people of Nepal and the readiness of UNESCO to support Nepal to the maximum extent possible.

Guests attending the Evening included Ambassadors of ASPAC and other member states of UNESCO, senior officials of the Secretariat, nationals of various countries, including Nepal, living in Paris. Guests enjoyed food, delicacies, cultural performances and souvenirs contributed by many ASPAC countries. Nepal, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, among others, contributed to the event. Two Young Nepali artists, residing in Paris, performed separate traditional Nepali and Newari dances.   The Embassy has also been using the platform of UNESCO to promote Nepal through its participation in various activities.

Nepal coordinated the preparations for the celebration of the Annual Event. Nepal served as the Secretary cum Treasurer of ASPAC in 2014 and is the current Vice-Chair.  Nepal will assume Chairmanship of ASPAC from January 2016 for one year.

The group comprises 44 countries, of which 27 have permanent delegations to UNESCO in Paris. The ASPAC group represents more than 40 percent of the world population, endowed with a mosaic of rich cultural heritage, including arts, dance, music, cuisines, etc.
