NEPAL'S CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE ASPAC REGIONAL GROUP

 

                For the first time since its membership of UNESCO in 1953, Nepal has assumed Chairmanship of the regional group of the Asia and Pacific Countries (ASPAC) for the year 2016 in its Headquarters in Paris. At a special ceremony held today during the First Plenary meeting of the year of ASPAC regional group, H.E. Mrs. Ambika Devi Luintel, Ambassador/Permanent Delegate of Nepal to UNESCO took over the Chairmanship of ASPAC Group of the UNESCO from the outgoing Chairperson H.E. Ms. Zhang Xiuqin, Ambassador/Permanent Delegate of the People's Republic of China to UNESCO.

After the ceremony, presiding over the meeting Ambassador Luintel said that it was an honor and privilege for Nepal to Chair the Group during the year 2016 and expressed her sincere gratitude to all members of ASPAC for their trust and confidence bestowed on Nepal. She reiterated the commitment of Nepal in enhancing cooperation within ASPAC and between the groups and the UNESCO Secretariat. She highlighted achievements in the fields of UNESCO's competence such as education, culture, natural, human and social sciences and communication and information.  The ASPAC regional group is of a special significance in UNESCO in view of the biggest population, the greatest number of countries and rich cultural and natural heritage. The Group's solidarity and unity in the diversity has marked a spirit of cooperation in the entire membership of the organization, she further said. Many Ambassadors commended the role Nepal has played as member of the bureau of ASPAC in the past two years to increase coordination and cooperation in the group.

For the year 2016, the ASPAC regional group's bureau consists of Nepal as Chairperson, Malaysia Vice-Chair and Palau Secretary and Treasurer. This year is the third year in a row Nepal will be in the bureau of the Group. Nepal has served in the bureau of ASPAC as Secretary and Treasurer and Vice-Chair in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Mr. Ram Babu Dhakal, DCM and Deputy Permanent Delegate coordinated various activities of the ASPAC Informal Coordination Group (AICG) related to subject matters of the Group's interest last year. The ASPAC regional group includes 44 member states of UNESCO and organizes its plenary meetings every month at the ambassadorial level on the subjects related to UNESCO.

Nepal currently serves as member in the governing bodies of UNESCO such as the Executive Board for 2013 to 2017 and the Intergovernmental Council for International Hydrological Program (IHP) for 2015 to 2019. UNESCO provides assistance to the Government of Nepal in education development and preservation and protection of the world cultural and natural heritage sites in the country. The Embassy has also been promoting the culture, tradition, arts etc of Nepal at the UNESCO by participating in the various programmes.
