1.  Buddha Jayanti Celebration at the Embassy


          The Embassy of Nepal organized a special program today in Paris to celebrate the 2560th anniversary of Lord Gautam Buddha.  On the occasion, visiting Minister of State for Livestock Development  Hon'ble Miss. Nar Devi Pun Magar, said that the recent international conference and the Buddha Jayanti celebration have reiterated Lumbini in Nepal as the birthplace of Lord Buddha. She expressed her pleasure in participating in the celebration organized by the Embassy of Nepal along with the Nepalese community members. The Hon'ble Minister of State is currently in Paris leading a Nepalese delegation to the 84th General Session of the Assembly of the World Organization of Animal Health to be held from 22 to 27 May 2016.


H.E Mrs. Ambika Devi Luintel, Ambassador of Nepal to France and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO shed light on the basic tenets of peace, non-violence and mutual respect as per Lord Buddha's teachings.  She spoke about the recent International Conference on Buddhism held in Kathmandu during 19-20 May, including the adoption of the Lumbini Declaration of 21 May. She said that Buddha Jayanti celebration reminds everyone to adhere to Lord Buddha's teachings and philosophy.


          Presidents, office bearers and members of Nepalese organizations including NRNA-NCC France, Tamu Samaj France, Maison Culturell du Nepal and Nepali Ekta Samaj, other members of Nepalese community living in Paris and the Embassy officials and their family participated in the celebration. Mr. Ram Babu Dhakal, DCM of the Embassy of Nepal highlighted the progress achieved so far in the development of Lumbini and conducted the program.

Earlier this morning, HE the Ambassador of Nepal and the DCM of the Embassy attended the Buddha Jayanti ceremony at the Europe's biggest Buddhist temple (Pagode Khanh Anh). In the course of worship, high priests mentioned Lumbini as birthplace of Shakyamuni Buddha.Vietnamese Buddhists living in France had organized the celebration at the Pagoda located in Evry town, 35 Km from Paris. The Mayor and elected representatives of Evry town among others were also present on the occasion.


2.       International Vesak Day Celebration at UNESCO   

For the first time, Nepal participated in its capacity as the Chair of the Asia and Pacific countries (ASPAC) group of UNESCO in the international celebration of the Vesak Day held on the 20th May at UNESCO Headquarters. In a message of H.E the Ambassador, as the Chair of ASPAC, published in the program of the Vesak day, she highlighted that Asia and Pacific countries shared rich cultural heritage handed down from centuries and demonstrated the group's unity in cultural diversity.  She also mentioned the recent visit of the Director-General of UNESCO to Lumbini in Nepal, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. At the beginning of a symposium organized on the occasion, she expressed that Lord Buddha was born in Lumbini and his 2560th anniversary was being celebrated in Nepal and around the world. Teachings of Lord Buddha and the Buddhist philosophy underpin the spirit and ideals of UNESCO and are more relevant today than ever before, she emphasized.

After the symposium, some Asian countries including Nepal presented cultural performances. Nepal presented classical "Bajrayogini dance" performed by a young Nepalese artist Miss Prashansha K.C. Nepal along with other countries also contributed some food items.  Nepal attached high importance to the celebration as an ASPAC event with singular focus on Lord Buddha and Buddhism.
